Trademark protection lasts indefinitely — as long as it is renewed. A mark that misses the window first falls into the late-fee tariff and then loses the right altogether. We take on the tracking.

## In short: What Is Trademark Renewal?

Trademark renewal is the procedure carried out before TÜRKPATENT to extend protection for another 10 years before a registered mark's 10-year term expires. Under Article 23 of Industrial Property Law No. 6769 the term of protection is 10 years from the filing date and can be renewed indefinitely in ten-year periods.

The renewal request is made within the final 6 months before expiry; if that window is missed, renewal is still possible at a higher fee within a 6-month grace period after expiry. If the grace period also passes, the trademark right comes to an end.

## Three Windows, Three Different Outcomes

What decides a renewal is not how fast the Office works but which window you are in. TÜRKPATENT is under no obligation to remind you when renewal is due; the responsibility to track it rests with the trademark owner.

- **The final 6 months: normal fee** — The six-month window before protection expires. The request and the payment are completed within it. Renewing at the start of the window causes no loss of rights.
- **The next 6 months: late fee** — If the window was missed, renewal is possible within the grace period at a higher fee and no gap arises in protection. During this period, however, the mark appears as "expired" in the registry.
- **After that: loss of rights** — If the grace period also passes, the mark is removed from the registry and the right ends. The only way to regain it is a fresh registration application — this time with a similarity examination.

### 2026 Official TÜRKPATENT Renewal Fees

| | |
| --- | --- |
| Trademark renewal fee (up to two classes) | 8.730 ₺ |
| Each additional class (third and subsequent) | 750 ₺ |
| Renewal of an expired trademark (up to two classes) | 15.420 ₺ |

These are official fees payable to TÜRKPATENT; attorney service fees are additional. The schedule is updated each year end by a communiqué published in the Official Gazette.

## How Is a Trademark Renewed?

- 1
  **Checking the Registry Details**
The renewal request can be made by the owner recorded in the registry or their attorney. If there is a change of corporate name, an address update or an unrecorded assignment, those recordals are completed first; entering the renewal period with such gaps is the most common cause of delay.
- 2
  **Scope Decision: Full or Partial?**
A trademark can be renewed for all of the goods and services covered by the registration or for only part of them. In a partial renewal, protection in the classes left out ends permanently; before deciding, the place of those classes in the business plan is assessed.
- 3
  **Request Through EPATS**
The renewal request is created through EPATS, TÜRKPATENT's electronic filing system, using e-Devlet credentials. No additional document, power of attorney or evidence of use is required; the basis of the procedure is the existing registration.
- 4
  **Paying the Fee in Time**
What matters in a renewal is not only the request but that the fee has been paid in time. A request whose payment is not completed has no effect. The fee is calculated by the number of classes.
- 5
  **Registry Recordal and Bulletin Publication**
If the conditions are met, the Office records the renewal in the registry and publishes it in the Bulletin. The renewal takes effect from the day following the expiry of the previous term, so no gap in protection arises.

## Do Not Count the Term From the Certificate

The most common miscalculation is to start the 10-year term from the date the registration certificate was issued. Because the examination, publication and opposition stages between filing and certificate can take about a year, a calculation based on the certificate shifts the renewal window by months.

### Example timeline

Protection for a trademark filed on 15 March 2016 expires on 15 March 2026. The normal renewal window runs from 15 September 2025 to 15 March 2026; the grace period then runs from 15 March to 15 September 2026. The renewed term attaches to 16 March 2026, not to the day you paid — so no gap in protection arises.

### Why Renewal Differs From a New Application

- **No similarity examination is carried out** — The mark does not undergo a fresh absolute or relative grounds examination.
- **Not open to opposition** — A renewal is recorded in the register and published in the Bulletin, but it is not open to opposition.
- **The priority right is preserved** — Your priority right from the registration date continues uninterrupted.
- **The Office checks only two things** — Whether the request was made in time and whether the fee was paid.

This distinction matters in practice: even if you had a dispute with a similar mark 10 years ago, that argument is not reopened at renewal.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Ask us anything you want to know about trademark renewal.

- **What is trademark renewal?** — Trademark renewal is the procedure carried out before TÜRKPATENT to extend protection for another 10 years before a registered trademark's 10-year term expires. Renewal is a continuation of the existing registration, not a new application. The request is made through EPATS within the final 6 months before the term expires, and a trademark can be renewed indefinitely in ten-year periods.
- **How many years is a trademark registration valid?** — A trademark registration is valid for 10 years from the filing date under Article 23 of Industrial Property Law No. 6769 and can be renewed indefinitely in ten-year periods. The most common miscalculation is to start the clock from the date the registration certificate was issued; the time between filing and certificate shifts the renewal window by months.
- **When must a trademark be renewed?** — A trademark should be renewed within the final 6 months before its protection expires, and the renewal fee must also be paid within the same period. Renewing at the start of the window causes no loss of rights, because the new term still begins on the day following the end of the old one. The right strategy is therefore to renew as soon as the window opens.
- **What happens if I miss the renewal deadline?** — If you miss the trademark renewal deadline, renewal is still possible at a higher fee within a 6-month grace period from the expiry date, and no gap arises in your protection. If the grace period also passes, the trademark right ends; the only way to regain the mark is a new registration application, which is once again subject to similarity examination.
- **How much does trademark renewal cost?** — The trademark renewal fee in the 2026 TÜRKPATENT schedule is ₺8,730 for up to two classes, plus ₺750 for each third and subsequent class. Renewing a trademark whose protection has already expired costs ₺15,420 for up to two classes, plus ₺1,310 per additional class. These are official fees payable to TÜRKPATENT; attorney service fees are additional.
- **How much more expensive is a late renewal?** — A late (penalty) trademark renewal costs close to twice the normal renewal fee. A normal renewal for up to two classes is ₺8,730, while renewing a trademark whose protection has expired costs ₺15,420. The grace period is a safety net, not a plan: during it the mark shows as "expired" in the registry and raises questions in assignment, licensing or financing processes.
- **Is the trademark re-examined at renewal?** — No, the trademark is not re-examined at renewal. Renewal is a continuation of the existing registration: the mark does not undergo a fresh similarity or absolute/relative refusal examination and is not opened to opposition. The Office checks only whether the request was made in time and whether the fee was paid; if the conditions are met, it records the renewal in the registry and publishes it in the Bulletin. So even if you had a dispute with a similar mark in the past, it is not reopened at renewal.
- **When does a renewal take effect?** — Trademark renewal takes effect from the day following the expiry of the previous term of protection. Paying at the start of the window does not bring the new term forward; protection continues uninterrupted and no gap arises. For example, for a trademark whose protection expires on 15 March 2026, the renewed protection attaches to 16 March 2026, not to the day the payment was made.
- **What is partial renewal?** — Partial renewal means renewing the trademark for only part of the goods and services covered by the registration. For companies whose business model has changed over ten years it is a natural chance to simplify; since the fee is fixed for up to two classes, it can lower the fee where the mark covers more than two classes. However, protection in the classes left out ends permanently and cannot be recovered, so the place of those classes in the business plan is assessed before deciding.
- **Are documents or a power of attorney required for renewal?** — No, trademark renewal does not require any additional document, power of attorney or evidence of use; for a request made through EPATS with an e-Devlet login, the basis of the procedure is the existing registration. Where it is handled by an attorney, the mandate is established separately. The request can be made by the trademark owner recorded in the registry or their attorney, and the fee must also be paid in time.
- **Does TÜRKPATENT remind you when renewal is due?** — No, TÜRKPATENT is under no obligation to remind you when your trademark renewal is due; the responsibility to track it rests entirely with the trademark owner. For Webx clients, automatic reminders are sent through the panel, e-mail and SMS as the renewal period approaches. Renewal is made within the final 6 months before protection expires; if this window is missed, renewal is possible only within the 6-month grace period at a higher fee.
- **My trademark was assigned but not recorded — can I renew it?** — Before renewing a trademark whose assignment has not been recorded in the registry, you need to complete the recordal of the assignment, because the renewal request can be made by the owner recorded in the registry. Otherwise the request may not be processed because of the ownership discrepancy. An assignment requires a written, notarised contract to be valid; recordal in the registry allows it to be relied on against third parties. We can run the assignment process with you.
- **My company name changed — what should I do before renewing?** — If your company name has changed, it is recommended to update the name in the registry before renewal, because the renewal request must be consistent with the registry record. A change of corporate name does not invalidate the registration; the trademark number and priority right are preserved. However, entering the renewal period with gaps in name, address or assignment records is the most common cause of delay.
- **I changed my logo — can I use the new one at renewal?** — No, the registered logo cannot be replaced with a new logo at trademark renewal. Renewal continues protection for the identical registered sign; the mark itself cannot be changed at this stage. A materially different new logo requires a separate registration application. Unlike a renewal, that application is examined and, once published in the Bulletin, is open to opposition for 2 months.
- **Do you renew my overseas trademarks too?** — Yes, we also handle the renewal of your overseas trademarks. An international registration under the Madrid Protocol is valid for 10 years and is renewed through WIPO, so renewal can be handled from a single point. We track your Turkish and overseas files on one shared calendar in the same customer panel, so renewal dates are followed from one place.

The terms and conditions on this page are based on Industrial Property Law No. 6769 and the fees on the 2026 TÜRKPATENT fee schedule. The schedule is updated each year end by a communiqué published in the Official Gazette; the current amount should be confirmed before filing.
